MARINA DA GLÓRIA • GUANABARA BAY

Urban estuarine environment

Dezembro 2024 – July 2025

Located in the heart of Guanabara Bay, Marina da Glória is one of Rio de Janeiro’s main meeting points  between city, sport, tourism, and the sea.

It was here that the Caravela began  its first long-term operation in an urban coastal environment,  closely observing the dynamics of the water  in one of the city’s most iconic settings.

Here, water connects different uses,  activities, and communities,

making visible the relationship  between marine ecosystems and urban life.

WHY THIS TERRITORY MATTERS

Marina da Glória holds a strategic position within Guanabara Bay.

Beyond its importance for navigation, sports, and tourism,
the territory offers a unique opportunity to understand
how nature-based solutions can perform in intensively used urban environments.

It was also one of the first places where the Caravela
operated continuously, allowing us to validate processes,
deepen ecological monitoring, and expand our understanding of the bay’s dynamics.

CARE, BUILT TOGETHER

The project was led by Infinito Mare in partnership with Marina da Glória, BR Marinas, and the Brazilian Sailing Confederation (CBVela),  strengthening the connection between water regeneration,  sports, education, and Ocean Literacy.

Research and analyses associated with the operation  were carried out in collaboration with institutions including  USP, UFF, and PUC-Rio.

The knowledge and insights gained from this operation

continue to contribute to the Caravela’s evolution  and inform new projects across Guanabara Bay.

WHAT THIS WATER REVEALED

Marina da Glória was the first territory to demonstrate the Caravela’s potential
in an urban coastal environment.

Throughout the operation, biomass growth, periodic sampling, and the continuous generation of environmental data deepened our understanding
of the dynamics of Guanabara Bay.

The territory also revealed the power of education and direct experience.

Through activities carried out in partnership with the Brazilian Sailing Confederation (CBVela) and the Velejando para o Futuro program, hundreds of children had the opportunity to connect more closely with water, science, and Ocean Literacy.

By turning Guanabara Bay into a space for learning, the Caravela helped strengthen the connections between territory, knowledge, and care.

More than monitoring an environment, the operation helped make visible a new way of relating to the bay.

WHAT THIS TERRITORY REPRESENTS

Marina da Glória marks an important milestone in Infinito Mare’s journey.

It was here that the Caravela began one of its first long-term operations and started building its relationship with Guanabara Bay.

More than a place of operation, this territory became a living laboratory.

It was here that we learned about biomass, monitoring, and ecological dynamics.

But it was also here that we discovered something equally important:

the Caravela’s impact goes beyond the data it generates.

Its presence in the territory sparks curiosity, brings people closer to the water,
and creates new opportunities for dialogue, learning, and care.

The knowledge and insights gained at Marina da Glória continue to shape many of Infinito Mare’s operations, helping us scale the technology and foster a new culture of connection with our waters.
